The choice of Maine as part of Captain Marvel's origin story makes sense when you realize the writer loves our state. According to the Portland Press Herald, Margaret Stohl spends a lot of time with friends in Harpswell, Maine, so she set a good chunk of the story in the coastal town. Before becoming Captain Marvel, Carol lived with her family in Boston but spent their summers in Maine.

The book also shows Captain Marvel flying under a bridge next to a sign reading "Harpswell Sound - Summer Home of Captain Marvel."

According the to Marvel's description of the series, her sports loyalties are in the right place too:

Carol Danvers was just a girl from the Boston suburbs who loved science and the Red Sox until a chance encounter with a Kree hero gave her incredible super-powers.

With a new movie featuring Captain Marvel coming out next year, it makes us wonder if the Marvel Cinematic Universe will pick up on the Maine connection.

The Life of Captain Marvel #1 is available in comic book stores and digital download today.
