Only In Maine: Monastery Brothers To Open A New Brewpub Inside An Old Tanning Salon

Yes, you read that right. We love our beer here in Maine, so much so that a pair of monastery members are going to attempt their small batch barrels of beer into a full blown brewpub in Bucksport.

According to the Bangor Daily News, the "brothers" behind Friar's Brewhouse beer are going to transition their small operation into a larger one, with the hopes of opening a new taproom on Main Street in Bucksport sometime in November or December. The plan is to open their new taproom in a spot that formerly housed a tanning salon. They belong to the Franciscan Brothers of St. Elizabeth of Hungary monastery and the proceeds from their brewery will go to keeping their monastery open.

The "brothers" have one specific offering that is a Maine original. Their whoopie pie porter has become a desired selection and the "brothers" hope to be able to produce more of it and sell it directly to customers out of their taproom.

The "brothers" have owned and operated a popular bakery in Bangor for years. The Friar's Bakehouse has been a destination for those looking to enjoy a varied supply of delicious goodies but behind the scenes, the brothers have been brewing single-barrel batches of their beer. They plan to bring some of their baked goods to their taproom, which will be Bucksport's first.
