Portland, Maine’s Only Natural Waterfall is Hidden Just a Short Walk from Congress Street
Not far from downtown Portland is a trail system called the Fore River Sanctuary. The greenspace is just a quick drive from the heart of the Old Port and it spans 85 acres near Brighton Avenue and Congress Street. The Fore River Sanctuary offers nearly 6 miles of trails for running, mountain biking, and exploring.
Just off the Rowe Avenue trail head is Portland's only natural waterfall, Jewell Falls. In less than 10 minutes and after crossing a few adorable wooden bridges, my pups and I were at the base of Jewel Falls.
It's not the most magnificent of waterfalls. It's not particularly large or roaring, but it is a beautiful natural waterfall within Portland's city limits. The sound of the running water is completely soothing. It was so relaxing to sit by the water and take a breath.
Want to visit Fore River Sanctuary with friends, human or furry? Here are the details.
