Travel Back in Time to This Recreated 1800s New England Village
If you love the history of New England and want to immerse yourself in it completely, a recreated 1800s-era village in Massachusetts sits on more land than Disney's Magic Kingdom, and entering it is like having your own time machine.
Old Sturbridge Village is in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, and is a living museum with over 200 acres, 40 historical buildings, three water-powered mills, and a working farm.
Some of the buildings are originally from other locations around New England that were relocated to the living museum and restored. Others are authentic reconstructions of buildings as they looked in the 1800s.
Similar to many amusement parks, Old Sturbridge Village has three different villages you can visit. Center Village is the center of town with a bank, shoe shop, and taverns. At The Countryside, there's a working farm with lots of animals, a blacksmith shop, and a covered bridge.
The Mill Neighborhood is where you'll find a sawmill, grist mill that grinds grain, and carding mill that prepares wool for spinning.
What makes Old Sturbridge Village come alive is the staff who dress as if they were actually in the 1800s, and conduct tours demonstrating all the aspects of this unique living history museum.
Old Sturbridge Village has two holiday events at the end of the year: the Halloween-themed Phantoms by Firelight Friday through Sunday until October 29. and Christmas by Candlelight from 2-8 p.m. on select dates from November 24 to December 30. Check osv.org for tickets and schedules.
