The Rink at Thompson’s Point in Portland Has Set an Opening Date
If you love ice skating, but don't want to wait for your local pond to freeze, you'll get your chance when the Rink at Thompson's Point in Portland opens for the season.
Some history you may not know about Thompson's point is that in the early 19th century, it was a port for barge and boat traffic on the Cumberland and Oxford Canal that connected with the Presumpscot River eventually leading to Portland Harbor. It also served as a rail yard with the former Maine Central Railroad Mountain Division line that has since been abandoned beyond downtown Westbrook. Many of the brick buildings of the era are still there.
In 2015 Thompson's Point was redeveloped into a venue for concerts and festivals, shops, and breweries and is now home to the Children's Museum of Maine.
It is also the winter home of "The Rink," which Mainers look forward to each year. Thompson's Point is so excited about its opening that they have a live webcam showing the progress of the setup. The camera is on 24-7, so very soon, you'll be able to watch people enjoying time with the family skating at The Rink.
The planned opening of The Rink is set for Nov. 29th. There are always Admission is $12 and children four and under are free. You can also snag a booklet of 10 public admission tickets for $100.
Are you like me and don't ice skate? Bring the family and park yourself in the beer garden, warming, or VIP areas, and watch the kids enjoy themselves.
