UPDATE: Marijuana Might Not Be Legal in Maine Until January
The Portland Press Herald has reported that Mainers may have to wait until January to see the recreational use of marijuana become legal in the pine tree state.
In a story by Gillian Graham, the paper said that if the Secretary of State and the Governor take the maximum time allowed to implement the new law passed by voters last week, it might not go into effect until January 7th.
Many people believe that the results of ballot questions, and even elections of public officials, take effect immediately. That's almost never the case. Maine's new legislature will take office in mid-December, president-elect Donald Trump won't take the oath of office until late January, and similarly, there is a waiting period for the legalization of marijuana.
When Maine does implement the legalization of recreational marijuana use, adults over the age of 21 will have the ability to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana.
