Scotty TH, or more formally known as Captain Scott Doyle of the New Gloucester Fire Department, visited the Q studios to share important fire prevention tips...And he brought his fire gear for Lori and I to try on, boots and all.

It's National Fire Prevention Week. Scotty TH shared his important tips for protecting yourself, your family, and your home from the dangers of fire and smoke.

  • Every room needs a smoke detector.
  • Replace the batteries in your smoke detectors twice a year.
  • Don't forget: Stop, Drop, and Roll
  • Don't leave pots and pans unattended on a hot stove.
  • Don't use an open oven as a source of heat.

Scotty TH told us that fire gear is very heavy and firefighters need to be able to put all of the gear on in under two minutes to be nationally certified. Lori and I took this as a challenge.

So we did it in under two minutes, but Scotty TH says we're not quite ready to be nationally certified. We didn't properly clasp all the buckles or tighten the straps, we didn't wear the fire resistant hood underneath the helmet (because germs), our hair was hanging out (which is a definite fire hazard), and we didn't attach or start the flow of air.

Oh well, we still had fun stomping around in the big boots and heavy helmet. Watch the whole video...There's a bonus clip at the end.
