What’s With the Signs and Dancing at Congress Square in Portland? It’s All About Love
If you’ve noticed the folks at Congress Square movin’ and groovin’ with colorful signs that shout “love”, you may wonder who they are, what they’re doing, and who they’re with.
As soon as we see a group of people with signs, we immediately think “uh oh, do I agree with them or not?” It seems these days you can’t congregate together without having to be on a “side”. You must be affiliated with something.
There are no sides when it comes to love.
“There’s [unfortunately] an us versus them mentality lately”, remarked Joy, an organizer and avid participant with The Love Factory. “[But love] is a human need we all have, and something we have gotten far away from in our division over various things."
The Love Factory is an inclusive group that gets together to spread nothing but love, positivity, and kindness. No affiliation with a political party, religion, nor group - just human beings sharing, spreading, and feeling love and kindness.
“The whole idea behind it is just to really remind people that no matter what’s going on in any given moment, in any given day, to come back to love. So many people are in so much pain and hurting right now, and this is our way to remind people about the importance of having and sharing a loving connection."
Their message is about inclusivity, and of course love, regardless of who you are or what you believe in. Anyone is welcome to join in, hold a sign, or dance their stress away whether it be for 2 minutes or an hour. This group of love therapy welcomes everyone with open arms and encourages people to get involved, experience love, and participate in the compassionate practice to let loose and shake away any anger or stress ruminating within.
When I’m having a bad day, a simple smile from a stranger can turn it right around. Sharing that one second with someone is a special moment that uplifts you. I was having an especially hard time the other day and needed to go for a walk. When I stumbled upon The Love Factory dancing away on Congress Square, my spirits were immediately lifted and a contagious smile grew on my face; I shared that love and positivity for the rest of the day.
“It feeds me, it feeds everybody love. When you hold those signs you feel wonderful and great, you can feel the love coming back at you as well as projecting it out", shared Joy.
What started as an occasional event is now a weekly occurrence. The Love Factory moves and grooves at Congress Square on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m., Fridays at noon, and Saturdays at 3:00 p.m., rain or shine. All are welcome, all encouraged to join in on the much-needed and contagious spreading of love, positivity, and kindness.
