After a six year freeze, the University of Maine system will raise tuition for the 2017-2018 college year. How much will it cost?

For the better part of a decade, students that have attended one of Maine's public universities have enjoyed some serious cost certainty. But as everything around us gets more expensive, so will your college education, as for the first time in six years, Maine's public universities will raise tuition prices.

According to the Bangor Daily News, Maine's flagship university in Orono will see the smallest spike, at about 2.5% while some of the smaller campuses, including Augusta, will see a 5% increase overall. For perspective, it will cost in-state students about $116 more per year to attend UMaine. That may not seem like much on the surface, but there are no guarantees that the tuition will remain frozen moving forward. It could see another increase for the 2018-2019 school session.

Out-of-state attendees to Maine's public universities can also expect a bump although it is unclear how much. The tuition increase will be used to complete projects on each of the campuses, as well as tackle infrastructure issues that have been passed over in recent years.

Nationwide, public universities in other states have been raising tuition steadily over the course of the last decade. Maine still offers tremendous affordability for in-state students that cannot be matched by out-of-state campuses.
