Sitting in Logan Airport waiting for a flight to eventually get to Idaho...I started day dreaming about the Girl Scout cookies I ordered. And then I found an article on The Huffington Post about 5 things you did NOT know about Girl Scout cookies! And they were right!

  • 1) Girl Scout cookies are damn old! The first ones were sold in 1917! And they were simple sugar cookies as a school project.
  • 2) You can make the original cookie!  The Girl Scouts provides the recipe!
  • 3) Only two companies make the cookies: ABC Smart Cookies and Little Brownie Bakers. Each Girl Scout council can pick who they get their cookies from, but there's not a big choice.
  • 4) Honey Boo-Boo is banned from selling Girl Scout cookies. That sounds made up, but it's true! First she's not a Girl Scout and she was selling signed boxes on line. Now it wasn't for evil - it was just to help out her local troop, but the Girl Scouts of America said NO THANK YOU and shut 'er down!
  • 5) Thin Mints will never go away! They are mandatory along with the Peanut Butter Patties and the Shortbread cookies. They can change flavors and add flavors, but those three will ALWAYS be around.
  • 6) The 'Cookie Queen' is Elizabeth Brinton. She sold back in her day over 100,000 boxes! She holds the all time record and has even sold them to Regan, Bush and Sandra Day O'Connor!
  • 7) There's actually a strain of marijuana that is called Girl Scout Cookies. It has nothing to do with the cookies and is non-sanctioned. Hysterical and true!
  • 8) Back in 1923 in Philly you could buy a box of 44 cookies for 23 cents. Yes. A box of heaven for under a quarter. Boxes now days cost 4 dollars. And there's no 44 cookies in them!
  • 9) There was a cookie shortage during WWII. Supplies were low for the ingredients like sugar and flour. Customers were told to only buy two boxes! War IS hell!

And finally...

  • 10) Not every cookie is a hit. Let us think back to the lousy ones that have gone by: Fruity Mango Cremes, Iced Berry Pinatas and Lemon Drops had a short hated life.
