The huge 70,000 square feet plant will at first grow different microgreens and lettuce, according to News Center Maine, and about 1 million pounds of produce per year for Westbrook and surrounding areas.

Vertical Harvest's co-founder, Nona Yehia said in the article that she came up with idea after realizing that urban areas need year round fresh produce. Nona said that they want to grow as much food as possible while they employ as many people as possible.

News Center Maine said the Westbrook greenhouse will come with 50 full-time jobs. The area where the green house will go on Mechanic Street is part of a bigger project that will include a parking garage and new apartments.
