New Lawsuit Aims to End Maine's Sunday Hunting Ban Once & For All

It's yet again another attempt to restore hunting on Sundays in Maine. This time, there's a lawsuit that has been filed citing Maine's 'right to food' amendment that was passed by voters in November of 2021, according to WGME.

Those involved with the new suit told WGME that the original Sunday hunting ban was created “based on the religious and social beliefs at the time, not biology or science.” They allege that the Sunday hunting ban now goes against the new right to food amendment.

The 'right to food' amendment, which was approved by Maine voters last November, reads in part:

"All individuals have a natural, inherent and unalienable right to save and exchange seeds and the right to grow, raise, harvest, produce and consume the food of their own choosing for their own nourishment, sustenance, bodily health and well-being, as long as an individual does not commit trespassing, theft, poaching or other abuses of private property rights, public lands or natural resources in the harvesting, production or acquisition of food." Back in March, there was another proposal to end the Sunday hunting ban in Maine. Though that was voted down by the legislature's Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Additionally, a group that represents Maine guides was also opposed to ending the ban, says WGME.

The news station reports that in the last nearly 5 decades, there have been 35 attempts in the legislature to overturn the ban. It is also noted that the only other state to enforce a ban on Sunday hunting is Massachusetts.
