One of the three bridges that carries traffic between Portsmouth and Kittery will close for most of the day on Tuesday.

The Memorial Bridge on Route 1 will close between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. for utility inspection, according to the New Hampshire Department of Transportation. It will be closed to both drivers and pedestrians.

Weather should not be an issue as the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, is calling for sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s.

Drivers will be directed to use the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge, aka the Middle Bridge, on the Route 1 Bypass.

A Memorial Bridge has carried Route 1 traffic since 1923. The original bridge was closed in 2011 because it was cost-prohibitive to make repairs. The current bridge opened in 2013 using parts of the old bridge.

It is the only one of the three that allows pedestrian use.
