Are Single-Use Plastic Bags Coming Back to Maine?
Remember plastic bags?
Back in the day, they were part of our daily lives. We’d see them in every store we shopped in, stepped over them in parking lots as they drifted through the streets, and plucked them out of the ocean when we went for our summer dips.
A year and a half ago, Maine made the positive move to ban single-use plastic bags and we haven’t seen them since.
Well, if Rep. Chad Perkins, D-Dover-Foxcroft has his way, single-use plastic bags will be returning to our state.
Single-Use Plastic Bags in Maine
The Republican lawmaker is sponsoring the LD 425 bill to reverse the plastic bag ban that was put in place for a reason.
Don’t you love when the people in power put all their energy and efforts into reversing legislature that was put in place for a reason rather than focusing on important issues and moving forward as a state?
What is the point of this? We all know you have seven reusable bags in your trunk, Mr. Perkins, that you just forget to grab because you’re too busy making pointless bills instead of trying to better our state on actual real and important matters.
I guess I should call this an “opinion” piece now.
Rep. Perkins has apparently done lots of research and claims that single-use plastic bags may actually be better for the environment than paper or reusable bags, as shared by News Center Maine.
Environmental groups have already opposed the bill and I’m just going to go out on a limb here and say environmental groups are probably a little more educated on this topic and I’m going to trust those guys on this one.
Seriously, what is the point? Why do we need plastic bags again? We’re doing just fine without them.
