Boat Trip Worthy: Visit A Mysterious ‘Abandoned’ Town In Swan Island, Maine
You'll find this nearly "abandoned" town on an island in the Kennebec River next to Richmond, Maine. This is a different Swan Island from the one in northern Maine near Bar Harbor, according to Dylan Magaster who hosts the video below.
It was previously known as Perkins Township. The only way to get there is by ferry, or by taking a kayak or canoe.
Magaster says the town has been abandoned since the 1940s. Pollution in the the Kennebec River could be the reason why everyone left, after the businesses were forced to shut down, according to Only In Your State.com.
Points of interest in the town include the Robinson House and the Tubbs-Reed house. Tubbs was supposedly the mayor of the Massachusetts Militia, as per Magaster. You may not be able to go inside, but you can peek in the windows, as Magaster does in his video. Another must-see is the island's cemetery.
Only In Your State.com says the island is open to visitors from May 1st through the end of October. Even though the author of the article and Magaster, the host of the video tour, both say the town is abandoned, a lady in the comment section claims her husband is the island manager, and she says "staff live on the island 6 months out of the year." Magaster also states later in the video that the island is not completely abandoned.
