The Fryeburg Fair made a policy change for its 174th edition of the Blue Ribbon Classic which is getting both praise and backlash on its Facebook page.

This year when you arrive at the Fryeburg Fair, you'll have to walk through a metal detector to enter.

At last check, the fair's post on Facebook had 903 comments and 555 shares. Here are some comments from those opposed to the addition of metal detectors.

2nd amendment “the right to bear arms” concealed carry permit allows you to conceal. These are things that good citizens are allowed to do to protect themselves from people that do not follow the law. Good luck at the fair as I won’t be attending and putting my life in your “security’s” hands. - Justin Ambrose
Too bad for my 2nd amendment right I guess. - Taylor Turner
The Second Amendment doesn't apply here. According to the Maine State Police website, "The (concealed carry) law does not otherwise change where a person may carry or who may possess a firearm.  It will still be illegal to possess a firearm in the following places, with some very limited exceptions."
One of those places is on private property when prohibited by the property owner, as the Fryeburg Fair has done.
Here are some comments from those supporting the addition of metal detectors.
A reasonable policy for the Fair to make. Thank you to the fair directors for having the courage to make such a decision, which I'm sure was not made lightly. - Justin Gamache
Thank you for insuring the safety of the locals and general public!
I am sorry for the insane amount of people who can't understand that it is your right to post rules. If they dont like the rules they need not attend. The comments on your announcement are a clear showing of what is wrong with society. - Laurie Beck

Love it or hate it, the Fryeburg Fair has every right to use metal detectors and prohibit firearms and other weapons on their property. It may keep some away, but I feel like the fair will have the big crowds they do every year.
