Don’t Miss These Temporary Giant Bird Statues Towering 20 Feet Over Back Cove in Portland, Maine
If there's one thing Maine is notorious for, it's pop-up art (leave the lobster out of this one). Portland is the cutest town for so many reasons, and it continues to surprise me everyday. Today, it decided to surprise me with two larger-than-life, giant bird sculptures over 15 feet high that popped up randomly right in the middle of the Back Cove trail. That's exactly what the artists want you to say, too, after speaking with them.
Meet the "Myth Makers", Donna Dodson and Andy Moerlein. They're the artists behind these giant pieces. Andy, pictured below, was the nicest and most down-to-earth dude, and was kind enough to tell me more about why these birds are stationed here, and where they come from. He said,
We're just a joyful couple having a lot of fun making art all the time, and then we travel the world while we do it.
Don't wait to come see these unique statues in person, though. They're only here until Sunday afternoon, when Andy and Donna will take them down and set off on their next adventure. They've set up their giant art all around the world in places like Florida, Vermont, Boston, and beyond. The goal is to create temporary art and spread smiles all over the world. This one of the coolest projects I've ever come across.
They've created and built so many giant bird statues, and have documented each project (and their story)along the way on themythmakers.org.
Thanks for bringing joy to the world, Donna and Andy. You absolutely brightened my day, and I hope our viewers and listeners can make it your way to see these beautiful statues before you leave!
