4,300 people a year start an oil fire while attempting to deep fry a turkey for Thanksgiving. The results can be disastrous. Several people cook it too close to the house, or on some occasions in their garage and end up burning their entire house down. That's no way to spend Thanksgiving.

Here are some tips and tricks to deep fry your turkey safely:

Get Away From The House. It's suggested that you stay about 10 feet away from your home while deep frying.Make sure kids and pets stay clear of the fryer.

Be Sure The Fryer Is On Flat Ground. The oil has to be level and steady at all times. Find a flat, level surface to place the fryer on.

Make Sure Your Turkey Is Completely Thawed And Dry. Extra water will cause the oil to bubble furiously and spill over. If oil spills from the fryer onto the burner, it can, and usually does, cause a fire.

Watch That Temp! BE CAREFUL when touching the turkey fryer. The lid and handle can become extremely hot and cause burns. Also be sure to keep track of the oil's temperature as many fryers do not have their own thermostats.

Be Prepared. Have a fire extinguisher (multipurpose, dry-powder) ready at all times in the event that the oil ignites. Even the best chefs have accidents sometimes. And for the love of God do not leave the fryer unattended.
