When you think of the state of Maine, what is the first image that pops into your head? If you answered lighthouses, you're not alone. The Pine Tree State is home to dozens of lighthouses, including the iconic Portland Head Light. But what many people don't realize is that these lighthouses cost money to maintain, so their caretakers are constantly looking for ways to raise money to keep them going. Their latest fundraising effort involves a Maine specialty license plate. In order for for the Maine secretary of state to submit proposed legislation seeking authorization of the lighthouse specialty plate, they need to sell 2,000 pre-orders of the plate. They're well on their way, but still need to sell a few more in order to get the plates one step closer to reality. So if you pre-order a plate, not only are you helping to make the plates available, you're also donating money to help with the lighthouses. Out of the $25 you spend on the plate, $10 goes to the lighthouses! If you're interested in pre-ordering one, click here for the Maine Lighthouse Trust's website.
