The hornet population is booming in Maine right now because late summer is the time of year that colonies grow, and they are growing like nothing I've ever seen before!

My son was stung on the lip by a hornet a few weeks ago at camp, and I've been stung twice after never having been stung by a bee or hornet my entire life. The first sting was a mild one last week when I felt something crawling on the back of my neck and swatted at it.

The second sting was on my tongue! I went to take a sip of my drink without looking and there was a hornet in the bottle. I felt something crawling on my tongue and then a sharp pain so I grabbed whatever it was and threw it to the ground. It was instantly dead, but it left the stinger and part of its body in my tongue. I pulled that out with tweezers as my tongue swelled up. The swelling went down quickly, but the pain lasted for two days. I felt like the instant you accidentally bite your tongue but lasting a lot longer!

According to fosters.com Maine has seen a major spike in the hornet and yellow jacket population and pest control companies are seeing major business because of it.

There are some things you can do to help control them in the space around you. Tipnut.com has some do-it-yourself homemade traps that will lure the hornets to it and kill them. All you need is a 2-liter soda bottle and something for bait like soda, beer, jam of fruit juice.

Get the instructions on how to make your own trap at tipnut.com and make sure you check your drink before you take a sip so you don't end up trying to eat one of these things like I did!
