263,000 Maine Residents Without Power Friday Morning; Here’s Where the Most Outages Are

If you're waking up in the dark on Friday, April 5, in Maine, you are definitely not alone.

The recent storm dumped well over a foot of heavy wet snow across the region and left treacherous travel conditions and thousands of power outages in its wake.

There were multiple reasons that so many people in Maine ended up losing power during the storm. The first of which was the timing of the storm. You see, whenever we get these springtime storms, they often come after we've had a decent amount of rain and mild temperatures.

That means that as the 'winter' storm moves in, the ground and earth is soft and loose. This makes it so much easier for trees to uproot in the wind and under the weight of the heavy snow. When that happens, they often take power lines down with them.

The other reason is of course the type of snow that fell yesterday. Because the temperatures in a lot of Maine towns was hovering just above freezing, the snow that was coming down was extra wet and heavy. This put stress on the power lines and, in some cases, caused them to come down.

Central Maine Power was quick to send out email and text alerts letting their customers know that they were working hard to get power restored as quickly as possible, though they did advise that this would likely be a multi-day restoration effort.

In addition to CMP and Versant working hard to get everything back online, there are hundreds of extra line and tree crews that have come up to Maine to help with the cleanup and restoration efforts.

According to CMP, about 263,000 were still without power as of the morning April 5.

York County still has the most customers out at 80,000 in the dark. Cumberland County had 77,000 in the dark as of Friday morning. Several other counties also have tens of thousands without power too including Androscoggin, Kennebec, Lincoln, Oxford and Sagadahoc.

It is expected that the return for power for many could take a few days.
