We've come a long way since Friendster.

I remember the first time I ever saw Friendster. I honestly had no clue what it was. A friend was online and complaining about it, for reasons I can't remember. After that moment, I completely forgot about it until I got my first Myspace account. Well, my only Myspace account. And this was all pre-mobile versions of these sites. Oh, the humanity!

By the time all the other heavyweights became a thing, I knew all about them. Of course, now we have X, Tik Tok, Facebook, Threads, Instagram, etc. Not to mention any other imaginable way to connect with people via the internet. But it turns out in Maine, we loooooove to go online and give our unsolicited opinions, haha.

Nationwide, Mainers are the 2nd most social media obsessed states.

It's true. Only one other state spends a bit more time on the socials more than we do. Oregon is apparently the most obsessed, according to Hennessey.com. In Maine, per 100,000 people, we generate almost 140,000 searches a month. That means pretty much all Mainers are logging into some kind of social platform at least once or twice daily, with Facebook accounting for just about half of that traffic.

Massachusetts is right behind us in the Top 5, at #3. And not by much. But Massachusetts also out-populates Maine pretty substantially, so for us to beat them is pretty impressive. New Hampshire also came in at #9, so we New Englanders apparently have a lot to say. Or read. Or whatever.

But, if it seems like the comment section on social media is so active, it's because we Mainers can't keep our dirty fingers off the keyboard. Maybe it's because all those other places have more to do? It seems obvious when the cold sets in, so does our need to clickety-clack away on our keyboards.

As your targeted Facebook ads are probably already telling you, vacation season is coming. Be prepared to fly...
