Family Dollar in Westbrook, Maine, to Reopen After Lengthy Closure
Nearly a year ago, Westbrook, Maine, residents were stunned to find that a downtown staple had closed abruptly. Family Dollar had shut their doors out of nowhere last March. According to the Portland Press Herald, that closure stemmed from a rodent issue within the building.
Rodents seemed to be a nationwide issue for Family Dollar stores. According to MSN, the discount chain had to close more than 400 stores across the country due to rodent problems on premises.
The Westbrook closure was expected to be temporary, with belief that the rodent issue would be handled by the landlord and that Family Dollar would be able to resume business activities swiftly. In reality, that hasn't been the case.
According to Facebook groups about Westbrook, Maine, Family Dollar is expected to reopen as soon as this weekend. The store has been holding hiring events for the last few weeks, as well as continuing to make renovations on the interior of the store. Customers who visit the store will notice a rather significant transformation from nearly a year ago.
But Family Dollar will still be faced with a handful of issues. The exterior of their building is still an eyesore amongst a Main Street corridor that is quickly updating. Typically, exterior word to a building is done by the landlord.
Parking will also be an issue until the expansive parking garage attached to the new vertical greenhouse officially opens. When it does open, it will offer visitors to Westbrook's downtown area free parking close to stores like Family Dollar, CVS, and a variety of restaurants.
