Rockland, Maine, Named One of the Best Weekend Trips in Nation for 2024

It's just about that time of year when people will begin to pile into Maine and visit their favorite summer destinations all season long. There are several favorites throughout the state that are often talked about, from Old Orchard Beach to Bar Harbor to Kennebunkport or Camden.

But those aren't the only places in the state that are worth a visit. Lifestyle blog Time Out has released their annual list of the best weekend trips in America for 2024. That list features one coastal Maine city that gets less love than many of its counterparts.

That would be Rockland, Maine. It was among the top 10 weekend getaways listed by Time Out. In fact, Time Out had a lot of great reasons why Rockland should be considered for a long weekend, or just an overnight visit.

While many of Maine's most notable summer hotspots may be overcrowded, Rockland is big enough that things don't feel "too busy". Not only that, but there's plenty of culture to absorb, as Rockland is an underrated destination for art fans with multiple museums to explore.

Maine has become known for its food and beer scene, and Rockland has a taste of that as well. The city is home to a brewery as well as a world-renowned restaurant, Primo, that has been lauded repeatedly.

At the end of the day, it's all about the coast. The lobster is fresh in Rockland, which is why their annual Maine Lobster Festival celebration is such a big deal. There are cruises and fishing adventures for ocean enthusiasts.

There's also the incredible Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, which is filled with some amazing history. The granite pathway in the lighthouse is worth a visit all on its own.
