Was the World’s Largest Single-Mast Saiboat in Portland, Maine?
The huge single-masted sailboat sat in Portland, Maine's harbor with boats circling to get a closer look.
This boat was attracting attention, and it wasn't doing anything but sitting in the water. But the massive mast could be seen from the Casco Bay Bridge or the Martin's Point Bridge connecting Portland to Falmouth.
The boat to the left of this sailboat puts into perspective how massive it is. That's not a small boat trying to get a glimpse of the mammoth sailboat. I happened upon a woman named Holly and her friend, who were also gawking at the massive vessel.
If you happen to have a quarter on you, the viewfinders up on the Eastern Prom do work. So, I shared my quarter with Holly and her friend to get a close-up view of the mystery boat.
Could the huge sailboat in Portland, Maine, be the M5 (the world's largest)?
It's possible. This looks an awful lot like the M5, which is about 277 feet long with a beam of 54 feet. It has been to Portland, Maine, before, and docked at DiMillo's back in 2018, according to the Press Herald. The M5 was built by Joseph Vittoria, the former chairman and CEO of Avis rental car company. He sold it in 2011 for $25 million, according to sources in the Portland Press Herald article. The buyer was Rod Lewis, a billionaire Texas oil-and-gas tycoon. It has to be the same one.
Check out this footage of the M5. I think it's a match!
Whatever it is and whoever owns it, it's an attention-getter no matter where it goes! If it's still in the Portland, Maine harbor, it's worth a drive to sneak a peak.
