Lobstermen Asking For Changes At Portland’s Waterfront
Lobstermen along the Portland waterfront are running out of affordable space to store and repair their gear.
A few of them have come up with a solution to the problem, they want to install floating storage docks.
According to the Press Herald the problem began way back in 1980 when the first condominiums were built taking some space away from the lobstermen. However that problem isn't going away anytime soon as developers are still seeking permission to build on the working waterfront.
But there is good news for the fishermen, the Press Herald reports the Harbor commission likes the proposal saying it's an idea whose time has probably come, and will consider adopting new rules to allow storage docks to be moored in the harbor along with boats and ships. Right now rules allow ship and boat moorings, but says nothing about storage docks.
