We're past the halfway point of 2026, and there have already been a fair number of restaurants that have closed in Maine in the first six months of the year.
The dining scene is always shifting, but that still doesn't take away from the heartbreak that can come with news about one of your favorite eateries ending its respective chapter, regardless of whether it's been around for a few months or decades.
From Portland to Bangor to Skowhegan, 19 food spots across the state have closed in the first half of 2026.
Maine Restaurant Closings in 2026
Portland has seen the most turnover compared to other cities and towns for the first half of 2026, with closures including Quanto Basta, Blue Lobster Urban Winery, Novel, and Abbiocco.
The oldest of the recent closures was The Heritage House in Skowhegan, which has been around since the '80s. That's nearly 40 years!
Meanwhile, January proved to be the toughest month, with six spots closing.
With that in mind, here's a closer look at the restaurants that have closed across Maine so far this year.

Why Did Maine Restaurants Close in 2026?
A variety of reasons led to the Maine restaurant closures so far this year.
Not surprisingly, things like rising rents, lease endings, and economic hardships were listed by a number of food spots.
On the flip side, a majority of these places called out their customers and staff, thanking them, appreciating them, and remarking on the journey they've all been on.
And of course, for many, the closure of a bunch of these places will stir up fond memories of food, experiences, and special moments. That will never be taken away.
