That giant cruise ship in Portland, Maine, is the Norwegian Breakaway.

It's just a massive ship, and walking in downtown Portland, you didn't need to see the ship, to know it was in town.

Hundreds of people flooded the streets and cruisers are hard to miss. Some of them were very hard to miss. I ran into a group of about 15-20, and they all had matching t-shirts on.

The shirt says,

Friends don't let friends cruise alone.

They were certainly not alone, as the cruise ship holds nearly 4,000 passengers. With a crew that's more than the population of Oxford, Maine (4,100 pop).

Just how big is that cruise ship off Portland, Maine?

The Norwegian Breakaway is massive.

It towers off the Portland harbor as it's too big actually to dock anywhere.

Is that the biggest cruise ship to ever visit Portland, Maine?

It's not! Yes, they make cruise ships even bigger than this floating city. The biggest cruise ship to visit Maine was the Anthem of the Sea which is nearly 100 feet longer. But the granddaddy of all ships in the world is the Icon of the Sea, it's 1967 feet long, and can hold 7,600 passengers! Now we're talking about the population of Buxton, Maine!

If you are into cruising this seems like a pretty nice cruise ship. I've done some cruising and I prefer to land in a place for a while and not get there by boat. No matter how big that boat is. And this boat is so massive, it's truly like living on a city with different restaurants, nightclubs and a water park!

Welcome to Portland, Maine for a tiny bit of your journey!
