If you’re a dog owner in Maine, which tends to be almost everyone, you know that winter can be a bit… rough for your furry friend.

Snow, slush, and freezing temperatures don’t exactly scream “playtime,” but there’s a hidden gem in South Portland that’s perfect for chilly dog days: Willard Beach!

Dog Friendly Beaches in Maine

For as long as I can remember, I've been bringing my doodle Maverick to this beach no matter what the season is. In the summer time, dogs are allowed to romp the beach after dark and in the winter time there is no time restraints.

Here's why Willard beach is great for dogs

It’s practically a dog park without the fences. There's always other dogs for yours to romp with no matter the season.

In the colder months, Willard Beach becomes a literal mecca for dogs who want to run wild, dig in the sand, and splash in the waves without the summer crowds.

One of my pups favorite activities is to chase the seagulls which is perfect for the coastal shore lines of Maine. It's actually the one time and place in New England where I'm not annoyed at sky rats.

There’s plenty of beach that doesn't turn into that mucky mess to walk along since the sand it so coarse there. Whether your dog’s more into sniffing seaweed or sprinting across the beach, Willard’s got it all and is absolutely my first pick.
