Portland Quietly Raises Parking Rates For Second Year in a Row
When the City of Portland raised the parking meter rates from $1 per hour to $1.25 on July 1, 2017, it was big news. Exactly a year later, the rates have gone up again and this time it seemed to fly under the radar.
As of July 1, 2018 parking rates at metered spaces in Portland have gone up another 25 cents per hour to $1.50. If you're going to park less than an hour, that breaks down to two minutes for a nickel, four minutes for a dime and ten minutes for a quarter, but with the city's new convenient credit card kiosks and pay-by-phone options that set the minimum purchase to one hour, you're probably going to be hard pressed to find anyone fishing for dimes to pay the meter.
This time around, as far as we can tell, the city didn't make any major announcements on the price increase or posts on their social media accounts like last year and some people weren't too happy when they learned of the increase.
One Facebook user posted to the city's page "Can you guys seriously stop raising the parking prices for those of us who work in the city? You're only screwing us over trying to get more money from tourists. It's asinine."
