The No. 1 Rule Tourists Misunderstand About Portland, Maine

Why do tourists make me so angry? I'm not even sure if angry is the right word here, irritated maybe?

Either way they're definitely more annoying on more days than not in the old port and thats exactly where they all go first; downtown Portland.

Well, you see, we absolutely do have some cool things downtown but I'll be honest, it's mostly just bar after bar after bar mixed in with random gift shops and sometimes new coffee spots (you never know the turnover anymore).

As a former bartender at Bonfire Country Bar downtown and $3 Deweys, I notice there's a common denominator in the summertime with people who are from "away". That's what Mainer's apparently call literally anybody who isn't born and raised in Maine.

The common denominator is the way these people get genuinely surprised that our state law is a 12:45am. last call. No hard alcohol can be served after that and almost every single person who gets surprised by this is also very angry. After all they came here for a good time, right?

My thing is, how did we not know this? Usually you do your research on a city before dragging all your fiends to it and I'd assume you saw that little detail.

This is kind of why Portland is more of a day drinking spot than an up all night trying to find naughty biscawtie drugs and activities. Go to sleep kids. Unless you're in your 20's still; carry on.
