This 19th Century Candy Store in Maine Has Been Open for 132 Years
In July 1885, Addie Orne opened Orne’s Candy Store in downtown Boothbay Harbor, according to the candy store's website. She started out with just ice cream, bananas, and a handful of different candies, the website states, and she expanded her candy selection over the years. She was reportedly nicknamed "Aunt Addie" by the locals.
The store was sold in 1960 to Walcott Webster under the condition that he would preserve the old-fashioned 19th century candy shop, according to the Orne’s Candy Store website. Walcott kept his promise, made some improvements, brought in a local candy maker, which helped perfect the Maine-made fudge that is a town favorite, the website states.
The store is still family owned and operated and is now open for the season. You can bet that the people of Boothbay Harbor will be bringing their grandchildren there for years to come.
