Award Winning Maine Teacher Charged with Shoplifting
A shoplifting charge against an award winning Maine teacher will be dropped if she meets terms imposed by a court.
The plea arrangement requires Nancie Atwell, who won the $1 million Global Teacher Prize, to stay out of trouble for two years. She also must undergo a psychological evaluation and complete 100 hours of community service.
Atwell founded The Centre for Teaching and Learning in Edgecomb. Last year, she was selected from over 1,300 applicants for the first Varkey Foundation award.
In April, Atwell was charged with shoplifting a $14.99 blouse. She calls the incident a misunderstanding.
The shoplifting charges will be dropped if she meets the court terms, which includes proving she’s donating the prize money.
