The Portland Press Herald reports that on Wednesday the Legislature had approved a bill to ban the use of cellphones and other handheld devices while operating a motor vehicle.

Under the current law, drivers are allowed to talk on their phones but texting and driving is illegal however police say it's hard to enforce, according to the article.

The new bill will prohibit talking, texting and even using a handheld device while driving, even if the vehicle is stopped at a stop sign or stop light the Portland Press Herald reports.

A spokesman for Governor Janet Mills said she has not taken a position on the bill yet but Senator Bill Diamond told the Press Herald that Mills has signaled that she plans to sign it.
