According to an article on the WABI TV website, an eight-year-old Maine boy was killed in a Saturday afternoon crash in Rumford.

The article explains that authorities were first notified about the crash at about 3 PM on Saturday.  The caller reported that there had been a high-speed collision between two vehicles on Route 2 in Rumford.

When they arrived on the scene, first responders found that a 2016 Subaru Impreza, which was occupied by a man and his sons, had collided with a 2005 Volvo.  The driver was the sole occupant of the Volvo.

It appeared that the Subaru, driven by 42-year-old Matthew Kellog of Massachusetts, had been driving eastbound on Route 2 when he collided with the westbound Volvo, driven by F. Michael Piveronas, of Rumford.

A game warden and a nurse were nearby when the crash happened, and rushed to the scene to render aid to those involved.

Kellog, his sons, and Piveronas were all injured and taken to a local hospital.

Tragically, Kellog's eight-year-old son passed away from his injuries.

The crash remains under investigation, but police say that alcohol does appear to be a contributing factor.

Our thoughts go out to all those involved.

Even though we have seen a decline in the number of car crash fatalities in Maine, the number is still far too high.  In 2023, 134 people lost their lives on Maine roads.  That is the lowest number since the 131 traffic deaths Maine experienced in 2014.  As of March 8, there have been 20 traffic deaths in Maine in 2024.

Please use caution on our roads.  Watch your speed, buckle your belt, and drive sober.
