The Maine State Police are currently investigating a Monday evening crash that claimed the life of one person.

According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss, at about 5:40 on Monday evening, Maine State Police Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on the northbound side of I-95 in Clinton.

The initial investigation found that a 2009 Ford Fusion passed a 2020 Ford Escape.  Once in front of the Escape, the Fusion changed lanes.  Unfortunately, the driver had not completely cleared the Escape.  This caused the vehicles to collide.

The driver of the Fusion lost control of the vehicle and left the road.  The Fusion reportedly overturned and collided with a tree.

The driver of the Fusion was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver of the Ford Escape was not injured in the crash.

The press release goes on to say that the identity of the person who died in the crash will not be released until the family of the deceased has been notified.

The crash remains under investigation.

In recent years, we have seen a decline in the number of fatal traffic accidents in Maine.  According to an article from the Portland Press Herald, there were only 134 traffic fatalities in Maine in 2023.  This is a big decline from the 180 people who passed away on Maine's roads in 2022.

According to the article, wearing a seatbelt often makes all the difference when it comes to surviving a crash.  The article explains that 60% of the people who died on Maine's roads in 2023 were not wearing a seatbelt.
