Maine State Police Investigating the Discovery of Human Skeletal Remains

According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, police in Gorham are in the process of investigating the discovery of skeletal human remains.

The release explains that police received a call from utility workers near 76 Longfellow Road in Gorham.  The workers told police they believed they had stumbled across a human skeleton.

Once on the scene, members of the Gorham Police Department confirmed that the skeleton was real and alerted the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South.

The remains have been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiners in Augusta.  Gorham and State Police continue to investigate.

Police have yet to say whether or not they believe foul play was involved.

A check of Google Maps shows that Longfellow Road is a sparsely-populated part of town that is far from the downtown and tightly-packed residential neighborhoods.  Because of this, it would not be shocking for a skeleton to go undiscovered for some time.

Located in Cumberland County, Gorham has a population of just over 18,000.

The town was first settled in 1736.  Back then, it was called Narragansett Number 7 because it was one of several communities granted to those who fought in King Pihlip's War (also known as the Narragansett War) of 1675.

The town was incorporated in 1764.

Settlers found that the soil was good for growing crops, and that there was enough running water to power mills.  Soon, the town was producing textiles, carpets, lumber, carriages, and weapons.  Much of what was made was sold at the markets of Portland.

These days, the town is home to a number of modern businesses.  Additionally, many of the residents commute to Portland for work.
