In recent years, it’s clear that there has been a lot of misinformation floating around the dark interweb, which of course then spreads through general conversation.

There’s a good chance you have found yourself on social media or in conversation with someone who says something so outlandish and conspiracy-driven that it’s hard to believe it could possibly be true. Then there are other moments where you may hear something that could very well be true – but maybe isn’t.

With us now being in an election year, there is going to be information pouring out from every existing angle that you could think of. It’s important to not just accept what you hear as being a fact, and you may say to yourself, “Well, if I go on the internet, the information may not be correct”. That is also very true.

New Center Maine, or Channel 6 as us longtime locals still call it, has an entire section of their website called Verify. They will often use the material on their news broadcasts to educate their local viewers. A lot of what’s on the Verify page now is national fact-checking, but they invite local viewers to submit questions that they have on their minds.

Although it’s not guaranteed that your question is going to get answered, if you’re curious about something that’s important to you, there’s a good chance that someone else is too.

Just to be clear, this article isn’t just addressing misinformation in politics. As you will see on the Verify page, there are a lot of other topics addressed as well that are researched by their team in order to share accurate information with viewers.

Fact-checking, is more important now than ever, as there is a lot of misinformation and conspiracy theories getting tossed around, further confusing people and perhaps setting them on a track that they wouldn’t normally head down.
