When the first Market Basket opened in Biddeford, Maine, in 2013, it became the third major supermarket in Maine, joining Hannaford and Shaw's. There are plenty of other grocery stores, but for sheer size, these three are at the top.

Since the Biddeford Market Basket opened, two others have landed in Maine at Rock Row in Westbrook in 2020 and the Topsham Fair Mall in 2024. They're not done yet though.

On November 20 it was announced that a fourth Market Basket will be an anchor store for The Downs in Scarborough on the former site of the Scarborough Downs race track.

The Downs is similar to what was done at the former quarry by developers who created Rock Row, which also has a Market Basket.

According to WMTW, Maine's next Market Basket supermarket will be 80,000 square feet of space and will sit on the corner of Market Street and Scarborough Downs Road, creating 300 new jobs.

If you're unfamiliar with Market Basket, which is based out of Tewksbury, Massachusettes, there are a couple of things that may surprise you.

You won't find any self-checkouts at Market Basket. According to an article from The Herald News, the reason behind it is that Market Basket wants people to help people, even when it comes down to where to find an item the the very large store. Market Basket also doesn't have any loyalty cards. They don't want people feeling like there are two classes of customers and only one gets a discount.

Look for the new Market Basket at The Downs in Scarborough in the fall of 2026.
