This is the best news ever for a Necco wafer fan! The company that makes the flavored yet chalky candy wafers that people either love or hate has been bought by a company that will keep the classic candy alive.

Back in March, the New England Confectionery Company, NECCO, announced they would be forced to go out of business if they didn't find a buyer by May. They have been in business since 1901 in Revere, Massachusetts creating not only the wafers, but Valentine Conversation Hearts, Clark Bars, Squirrel Nut Zippers and many other long time candies. Not only would closing mean no more Necco candies, but hundreds of jobs would be lost at the plant in Revere.

Necco filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and on May 23, Spangler Candy bought Necco at auction for almost $19 million. Spangler also have a long history of candy making as the creators of Dum-Dums lollipops. Like Necco, they have another famous candy that people either love or hate: Circus Peanuts.

According to a press release on the Spangler Candy website, long term plans for the Necco brand is undecided, but it looks like the two most popular candies Necco wafers and conversation hearts will still be around for years to come.
