NH Man Lucky to Be Alive After Falling 70 Feet Down a Mountain Pass

Matthew Gunby, 36, definitely had a very scary start to the new year.

The Meredith man fell around 70 feet down a mountain pass during a recent hike.

According to WMUR, Matthew was trying to make it to the summit of Mt. Lafayette on Wednesday but decided to turn around when the weather conditions became too rough. With high winds and blowing snow working against him, Gunby ended up falling down the mountain into an area known as the Walker Brook drainage.

Luckily, he had his cell phone on him and was able to call 911, the news station reported.

Fish and Game Lt. Mark Ober Jr. told WMUR that conservation officers and volunteers from Mountain Rescue Services immediately went in to action to try to find him, but unfortunately the GPS coordinates from the 911 call were inaccurate and the search was temporarily halted around 3am.

According to the news station, even in a weakened state, Gunby was able to make another call Thursday morning. The National Guard was called out in the hopes that they would be able to locate Gunby with a helicopter view.

Around 10am, their hard work paid off and they were able to find Gunby and get him hoisted into the helicopter and deliver him to Littleton Hospital for treatment, WMUR stated.

Gunby is listed in stable condition.
