There's nothing quite like going to the movie theater and seeing a film on a massive screen with incredible sound.

Unfortunately, there will be one less place for you to do that in New Hampshire.

The Regal Cinemas in Concord is closing its doors for good on Thursday, April 18, 2024, according to the Concord Monitor, marking the end of a 28-year run for the theater in that location.

The news article notes that it was originally Canad Cinema in the 90s before changing ownership several times over the years and eventually being purchased by Cineworld in 2017 and keeping the Regal name.

If you visit the Regal Cinemas website, you can see no more movie showing options beyond April 18 with "Kung Fu Panda 4" as the last film to show at the theater at 7:30 p.m.

That would leave only one remaining Regal Cinemas in the Granite State with Regal Fox Run in Newington, according to the theater chain's website.

There is also only one Regal Cinemas left in Maine in Augusta, as the Brunswick location closed in February 2023.

The increase in streaming options (why go to the movies when you can watch from the comfort of your own home) and the COVID pandemic (shutting down theaters for a long period) have only added to what seems like a decline for movie theaters.

A Wall Street Journal article from February noted that ticket sales are "down 15% from the same period last year."

But who knows, maybe there will be a real turnaround and rise once again. What's the next Barbenheimer movement?

Thankfully, there are still movie theater options in New Hampshire beyond Regal Cinemas such as a few Chunky's Cinema Pub, Apple Cinemas and even an AMC Classic among them, but for some it now may be an extra drive to get there.

You can search Fandango.com for theaters closest to you.

As for what's next for the Concord theater?

The Concord Monitor notes that the future is uncertain for now with suggestions of tearing down the building for a mixed-use complex. Time will tell what actually happens.

For now, it's simply the end of an era.

Did you go to the Regal Cinemas in Concord? Do you have a go-to movie theater you love to attend?
