An odd discovery was made in the basement of a vacant apartment in Orono and was shared by the Orono Police Department on Facebook. As they were clearing the apartment, which the police often do to make sure squatters are not present, they peered down the basement door to make a bit of a startling discovery...
For hundreds of years, we lived in a world where clowns were popularly understood to be funny and whimsical ... or, at the least, not absolutely freaking terrifying. Pop stars sang songs like “Everybody Loves a Clown” and “Send in the Clowns.” Parents hired entertainers in colorful satin outfits to do magic tricks and make balloon animals at their children’s birthday parties. Ronald McDonald sold us hamburgers. Emmett Kelly and Red Skelton were TV staples. We had a tacit cultural agreement not just to tolerate clowns, but to look forward to having them around.
Some of these may be staged, but there is no doubt that most of these sightings are real. It's been called the Scary Clown Epidemic and it's growing in popularity across the U.S ever since the first scary clown photo went viral in 2014.
Even Stephen King, the man who made us all fear clowns is suggesting that these people in clown costumes back it down a bit...
Scary clowns are popping up all over the United States. Personally, I think it started as just a harmless Halloween prank to give people a little jolt, a little scare for the season.
If I saw a clown just standing on the side of the road this time of year I would probably jump a little and then laugh a lot...
