Maine Medical Center is warning people who visited the hospital’s emergency department on July 30 that they may have been exposed to the virus that causes chickenpox.
McKenzie is the only one in Maine with Infantile Pompe Disease and her family hopes to attend a conference for families battling the rare disease in August.
The outbreak is due to parents opting out of childhood vaccines needed to start school. 'Herd immunity' is developed when everyone is vaccinated, protecting babies and the elderly, who are especially vulnerable to serious cases of the disease.
