They say, "difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations." By them, I mean Google. But the saying it so very true.

Casey Ryder, from Boothbay got sober 18 months ago and started drawing while he was in treatment.

He is 31 years old and lives in Portland where he manages a sober house. Casey was in treatment when he was inspired to start drawing.

"I just fell in love with it and decided to draw something every single day. I found a couple artist who’s pencil work I really enjoyed and through a ton of practice I’ve managed to learn some of there techniques on my own."

Casey says his unique style has come from attempts at what he thinks others are doing through their mistakes but he takes those mistakes and goes with it. Casey's ability to see the beauty through mistakes is a talent that doesn't come often.

He has gone through a lot of trial and error and considers himself a, "reference artist". He spends a lot of time scouring Pinterest, looking for photos that spark artistic stimulation and then he draws what he sees.

"Recently I’ve started apprenticing as a tattoo artist in Scarborough and am pursuing a career in tattooing. Art and drawing is something I’ve always enjoyed but never pursued in any serious way.

Casey Ryder, Artist

Casey made the decision to change his life, not only to become a sober person but an artist who is now encouraging and influencing people like me to see the beauty in all things. Those who have been through difficult situations in life are the ones who hold the most bravery and the strength to persevere through anything. Casey has shown us all how awe-inspiring healing can be.

Today in a short time and thankfully due to the fact that I decided to change my life for the better I’ve truly found my passion, and there is nothing I’d rather be doing then putting pencil to paper. This whole journey the last year and a half and the places this art is taking me is just amazing."

I have created a mega-gallery below of Casey's art from his Instagram page.
