Where in Maine? What Is This and What Is It For?

We found this picture from our friends at Sky High Maine Aerial Photography. This one caught our attention. It's a stereographic projection of somewhere in Maine the photo  was taken this weekend. Any idea where it might be? What are those things sticking up? At first,t I thought they were trees or maybe some kind of porcupine convention. Then I looked closer:

The shot is from pier-side in Portland and from what we can tell they are leftover pilings from the Grand Trunk Railway loading docks from the 1800's. They are not much use now except if you are a seagull, in which case you own some of Portland's hottest waterfront real estate!
