3 Words it Seems Only Mainer’s Can Pronounce Correctly (Don’t Fight Me)
The battle of how to pronounce things will never get old. Before I moved to Maine from Boston, I thought Bostonian's were bad. No. Maine towns, streets, and nick-names all immediately became twenty times worse than bean town. Truthfully, sometimes you'll even catch locals pronouncing the town Bangor incorrectly. It's never not funny either. This is strictly opinion based after 9 years living in Maine, but here are the top 3 words that happen to all be town names that I've noticed are always mispronounced by out-of-stater's (unsure if that's even a word, but you get it).
1. Bangor. It's always Bangor. The poor town is commonly pronounced as Bang-ER, hard ER. It's actually pronounced with a hard OR, but apparently that's tough for most people.
2. Minot. Also a town in Maine. I typically hear people pronouncing it MINUTE, which, rightfully so, I'll give them that one. It's actually pronounced like this: My-Nut or MY-NUHT. Insert dirty joke, we get it.
3. Topsham. Another poor town that is constantly pronounced like Top-SHAM. LOL. Another one though, that I totally understand the confusion. It took me a long time to learn that it's actually pronounced Tops-HAM. Good luck remembering that because for some reason the human brain wants to go right back to sham every time.
Here's a list of 10 words or cities in Maine that out-of-stater's can't pronounce.
