Central Maine Man Arrested Following Police Standoff in Readfield
We finally have details about what caused that massive police presence in Readfield on Tuesday night.
According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, the police presence on Morril Road in Readfield was caused by an alleged domestic violence incident that turned into a lengthy standoff.
The press release explains that just after 6 p.m. on Tuesday, the Augusta Regional Communications Center received a call from a 70-year-old woman. She explained that her ex-husband, 71-year-old Carl Hiebert, of Belgrade, had assaulted her at her Morrill Road home. She also told dispatchers that Hiebert was in possession of a firearm.
When law enforcement arrived, they found the woman in the driveway of the home. The press release explains that she was removed from the scene and treated by Winthrop Rescue.
The former couple's 41-year-old son, who lives at the residence, was also home at the time of the incident. The man was able to leave the home without being harmed.
The press release goes on to explain:
The Maine State Police Tactical Team and Crisis Negotiation Team responded to the residence and was able to take Hiebert into custody. Hiebert was arrested and charged with DV Criminal Threatening with a Dangerous Weapon, Reckless Conduct with a firearm and DV Assault.
There is no indication as to the length of the standoff. However, we do know that it ended sometime prior to 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday.
*NOTE: All suspects are considered innocent until found guilty in a court of law
