How Much the Average Person in Maine is Spending on Groceries Per Month
The sticker shock has worn off for many people at this point. Following a wild year with product shortages, supply chain issues, and beyond, the price the average person pays for anything and everything at grocery stores has gone up.
But saying items have gone up 5% doesn't tell the full story. For many people in Maine, inflation has been felt across the board. From rent to utilities to heating oil. So how much is the average person in Maine spending on groceries per month?
According to World Population Review, the number is astounding. The average individual in Maine is spending about $372 per month on groceries. That means a couple is spending around $700 per month, and a family of four is averaging around $1,400 per month on groceries.
That individual number ranks Maine in the top 20 most expensive grocery bills in the nation. But if you think that's painful, you may want to consider our nearby neighbors in Vermont.
Based on World Population Review's methodology, Vermont has the second-highest grocery bill per person in the nation at $497. A family of four spends $2,000 for food and sundries in a state where money is already tight.
So who has the cheapest groceries per person in the nation? Believe it or not, it's New Hampshire. The Granite State has been proactive in attracting lower-priced grocery store chains. The state is also well-known for having no sales tax. The average grocery cost per person in New Hampshire is just $183 per month.
That's nearly $200 per person less than what people in Maine are paying.
