Labor Day became a federal holiday in the United States when President Grover Cleveland signed a law in 1894 that was passed by Congress declaring the first Monday in September as a holiday for workers. Its purpose is to recognize the American labor movement that made our country what it is today.

Since it's a federal holiday, many businesses close on Labor Day in Maine, but unlike Easter Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day, retail stores over 5,000 square feet are not required to close on any other federal holiday besides those three.

What will be closed on Labor Day, September 4? Here's a list that may come in handy for you.

Post Offices are closed on all federal holidays and will be closed on Labor Day, meaning you also won't be getting mail delivered. There's a handy app from the Postal Service that will track your mail, give you a delivery date, and even show you photos of what's coming to your mailbox. This could come in handy to know when that piece of mail you're waiting for will arrive around Labor Day.
